McCook: Over the yrs (updated periodically) Q issued brochures &/or maps for 2 routes with highlights of things to see & do enroute: TCZ for Chicago to Twin Cities & DZ/CZ for the Chi-Denver route. These are readily available @ RRiana Shows & were even sold @ St.Louis!

Steam Generator equipped frt units: Not all branch line & mixed trains always used passenger equipment with self-contained heating devices; some MoW trains, esp. in later years even had some S.S. equipment much less some hwts that req'd steam. ALso some frt units were protection for lesser trains esp. during seasonal rushes &/or when special trains such as carnival/circus, etc were being run. THe Q may well have had more units were such optional equipment than necessary but from a dis- patchers viewpoint, one can never have too many locos with all the bells & whistles (no pun intended). FRA does not require certain applicances to be in operating condition provided they are appropriately tagged (& in some cases clearly disconnected as well).

E Unit usage: Again, other RRs did indeed follow the Q's lead in using passenger units for a variety of assignments but the Q was the pioneer in such as evidenced by industry publications of the 50's. As an aside - the Q's reputation as the RR of presidents (with so many ex-Q mgrs ending up as Pres' of other Class I RR's) was also supple- mented by the fact that Q mgrs, out of proportion to their numbers, were elected to leadership in so many trade groups: American Ry. Assoc. of B&B, Int. Railway Fuel Assoc., etc. Purely a guess but based on reading copies of their respective proceedings, Q mgrs had 2 advantages: their bosses gave them the time (& the dues $$) to belong (many did - usually more than nearly any other RR) and they developed leadership ability as part of their Q employment. Also Budd & Murphy were very good about attending such groups annual meetings being among the few RR Pres' to do so.
