Sir: This may not be completely correct , but I would guess the railroad was trying to prevent the roofs from corroison . Soot and other combustion grime are very corrosive. Red lead paint was used extensively to combat iron and steel corroison in the early part of the 1900's . After about 1950 -60 its use was phased out due the toxic natural the pigment in red lead - lead chromate . [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |
