Question for any BRHSlisters who own a Challenger Mark Twain Zephyr:
Is "HUCKLEBERRY FINN" spelled right?
I'm asking because I'm in the process of completing a decal set to cover the
full history of all BR shovel nose motors and the fully-articulated trains, and
I'm aware of the history of misspellings of this car name.
It apparently began with the Edw. G. Budd draftsman who did the "final" 1/4"
scale General Arrangement drawing of the 9903. He spelled it "Hucklberry Finn".
Then, in the early days of the "decal wars" between Bill Walthers and Max Gray
(when all decals were being printed in letterpress using standard rinter fonts
for lettering), Walthers tried to do every streamlined name train in the US,
including the MTZ . . . printed in standard Globe font. Sure enough, there was
"Hucklberry Finn"!
I thought all this was past history until I received a copy of the original art
for Challenger's Zephyrs - and again, there was our old friend "Hucklberry
Finn".
I'm curious as to whether this spelling made it to the hobby shops yet again .
