Thanks Ed.....I've been waiting for somebody to straighten that out.
In the days when railroading was really railroading terminology was all
important.
For instance: There is no such thing as a "passing track" or "mainline" or
"order board. The correct terms are Siding and Main Track, and Train Order
Signal.
Incorrect designations in a train order could be used as a means of "testing"
by operating officers to determine proper rules compliance. If such
incorrect terminology was overlooked in a train order and such incorrectness
(is that a word?) was being used as a test, an investigation could be held
and discipline assessed.
The rules guys were sticklers for absolute and total accuracy.
If you want to see what failure to properly read and understand train orders
results in go into the old ICC Accident investigations available on the
internet and read a few. You will be enlightened as to how it was when it
was railroading, not just "playin train" as some of the old timers used to
say.
