In checking the Western History Library, Picture #451, shows a photo of #546
with horizontal check valves. Admittedly the photo dates from 1919, and
another photo shows one of the 0-8-0's with vertical ones and was taken in
1931. This says to me they were delivered with horizontal check valves as
per USRA plans and were changes shortly thereafter. John Trulson
