Richard--did you put a volt and amp meter on the unit? I believe the loco has a 
constant lighting circuit so the steady bulb only tells you that the volts are 
in a given range.

The amp meter will tell you whether current draw is rising and falling 
indicating a bind or interruption in the motor feed.
